To act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with our God.  Micah 6:8

High Frequency Words

With every new story we read in our Reading class there are 5 new words that are introduced.  Most of the time we read a new story every week.  The words for this week are:

one, this, likes, give, the

Be sure to have your child read these words to you.  A great way to practice these words at home is to write them on index cards.  Whenever your child has free time he or she can read through their words.

If they can already read the words then have them practice spelling them.

Chance Tickets

I will be using an incentive program that encourages students to listen carefully, work hard, and make good choices.  If a student does something well, he or she will receive a “Chance Ticket”.  They write their name on the ticket and place it in our “Chance Box”.  Every Friday I will draw 3 names out of the box, and those students will get to pick a prize from the prize box.  This is one way we will encourage them to succeed, both behaviorally and academically.

Poem of the Week (POW)

Every week students will be introduced to a new poem.  Each poem contains first grade site words (words that should be read without having to sound them out).  Throughout the week we will be doing various activities to practice reading the poem.  At the end of each week we will place the poem in our binders.  At the end of each quarter I will send their binder home so they can read the poems to you.  By the end of the year we will have over 30 poems we can read.

Short “a”

In Reading we discussed the short vowel sound “a”, as in apple, man, flat.  We read the big book “When the Alligator Came to

Class” and found all the short “a” words.  We used letter cards to spell short “a” words.  The students read the story “Max, the Cat” and created a mat for Max to nap on.

Homecoming

Homecoming Week is September 27-October 1.  The Homecoming parade

is on Friday, October 1st, and we will need a truck,

flatbed, and a driver.  If you or anyone that you know would be interested in volunteering please let me know.  The sooner we get this set up the better.  Thanks!

Student Supervision

In the mornings at Remsen, students will be supervised from 7:45 to 8:00 when they load the bus to Oyens, and again from 3:00 to dismissal at 3:20 in Remsen.

P.E.

Mrs. Amy Roder is our new P.E. teacher and she is asking for any volunteers to make 4x4 bean bags to use for class.  She also needs swim noodles if any of you would like to donate.  Thanks.
