 Classroom News:

 Catholic Schools Week

We will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week this coming week with some special activities each day.

Monday, Feb. 1: We will be having a speaker from Plymouth County Health to talk about heart health.

Tuesday, Feb. 2:  Students will be doing Jump Rope for Heart.  A permission form needs to be signed whether the student has pledges or not.  The student should wear their Olympic team color and bring a water bottle.  Students will be dismissed from the high school.

Wednesday, Feb. 3: Students will be making valentines for the elderly of the community.

Thursday, Feb. 4:  All School Picnic at noon and liturgy at 1:30.  Dismissal will be after Mass if they have a signed permission form.

Friday, Feb. 5:  Student will have activities in the afternoon.  Each student may bring a snack and beverage for themselves.

Snacks

Several times during the year, the children are asked to bring snacks for the class.  We drew names for the different occasions that would be nice to have snacks for.  It can be any kind of snack that you choose.  It can range from fruit to crackers to cookies to bars to whatever you feel is appropriate.   I feel as parents you can decide what is acceptable.   There are 18 students in our class.

Book It

Pizza Hut is promoting reading by offering the “Book It” program to our school.  Each classroom teacher sets a goal that he/she feels the students can reach.  Our second grade goal is to read one easy (picture) book or 25 pages in a chapter book each week.  Then the child is asked to do a book report.  After the child has completed four reports, he/she will receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza.  The “Book It” certificate can be redeemed at the LeMars or Kingsley Pizza Hut.  The “Book It” program goes from October to March.

Assignment notebooks are a new addition to second grade.  Hopefully at the end of the day, each student will write his/her assignments and other messages in the notebook.  Please check and sign it daily.  Hopefully this will help all of us.

Most of our text books have great web sites that either review or enrich what we are studying.  I will list the sites in the next few newsletters and how to get there.  Use them, if you wish and however you see fit.

One service project that is ongoing is collecting things for “Oscar Cash.”  We are collecting several items for various reasons, (mostly to earn extra money and school items.)  Big G box tops earn the school money and the students get a casual day on Fridays for every 50 box tops collected. (Thanks for the box tops that have been sent).

We also collect Campbell soup labels. The labels are turned in to get various equipment for school, such as: playground equipment, balls, and CD players.   Other items are also collected.  Tyson packages earn the school money.  Pop-tops are donated for Ronald McDonald houses.  Another project is the paper recycling.  We have boxes in the grade school for anyone who wants to contribute to that project.  Empty ink jet cartridges can be turned in to the office. Our newest project is collecting the lids from gallon containers of Land of Lakes milk.  The school will also earn money for those.

Please feel free to contact me if you have a concern or question.  If there is a problem, please contact me first.  Sometimes I am not aware of the problem.  I can’t try to fix it, if I don’t know about it.  Usually communication solves a lot.  My e-mail is at the top of every newsletter.  I check my e-mail every morning around 8:00, but don’t have time to check it often during the day.  I can be reached at school (786-1160) or at home (376-4491).  Our phone is working again. :)  I have a Marcus phone if you try to find me in the phone book.
