Remsen St. Mary’s Schools, Grades TK-12 Remsen St. Mary’s Schools are fully accredited and the schools offer a solid academic education in a Catholic/Christian atmosphere beginning with Transitional Kindergarten and continuing through grade twelve. St. Mary’s Schools provides for education in three educational centers: the early childhood grades TK, kindergarten, and first grade are housed at St. Catherine’s center in Oyens; Second through eighth grade are at St. Mary’s Grade School center in Remsen; and grades nine through twelve are educated at St. Mary’s High School. Every day begins with prayer, and every class begins with prayers of petition and guidance. A portion of every day is set aside to learn about our Catholic faith and practices. Student Masses encourage youth to be active participants in their parish by being a Mass server, lecturing, and acting as greeters for the liturgy. At St. Mary’s, students are given opportunities to serve others through many outreach programs to less fortunate fellow human beings. Life from conception to natural death is engrained in our teachings and practices as St. Mary’s is “passionately prolife.” For parents living out of the Remsen-Union district, our Iowa legislatures have set aside a special fund to reimburse parents for transporting their children out of their district to a private school. We encourage carpooling! At St. Mary’s schools, a child’s tuition varies with the grade level. Tuition payments cover less than 50% of the cost of educating a child. The balance is offset by fundraising, such as “Friends of St. Mary’s Ball,” and the cost is also supplemented by St. Mary’s Parish. Tuition Cost for the 2010-2011 school year is as follows: Transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Grade Students: $1,975.00 Second – Eighth Grade Students: $2,075.00 Freshmen $2,250.00 Sophomore $2,345.00 Junior $2,385 Senior $2,435.00 Tuition is the same for students from Marcus Holy Name, St. Michael’s in Kingsley, etc. There are wonderful programs for help with tuition payments, the most beneficial is the Msgr. Lafferty Tuition Foundation (MLTF) scholarships. An MLTF scholarship may cover up to 75% students’ tuition, depending on the family’s financial situation (see FAIR under the Parents tab). St. Mary’s is also offering a one-time $300.00 tuition credit for a new family to the St. Mary’s School System. A family who recruits a new family to RSM will earn a $300 tuition credit. St. Mary’s families may also choose to participate in the scrip program where they can earn dollars for tuition by using gift cards (purchased through St. Mary’s Rectory) instead of cash when they shop for groceries, clothes, dining out, etc. Purchased scrip gift cards are worth the full amount that the check was written for, and the vendor in turn will give back the percent he is donating to St. Mary’s. Half of the percentage offered by the vender goes into the designated to receive the tuition dollars. The other half goes to the general St. Mary’s tuition assistance fund. Friends and family can also purchase scrip and direct the tuition dollars toward their desired familiy’s account. A family’s home parish may also have a program for the Catholic school tuition needs of their parishioners. For more information contact the grade school, 786-1160, Or the high school, 786-1433
